Thomas Sheraton-1751-1806
English cabinet maker. Furniture
was exquisite in shape, form, color and decorations. He used inlays of rare
woods and veneers. He used satinwood extensively and championed the straight
line in furniture making. During the last decade of the 18th century and early
years of the 19th century, Sheraton's influence dominated the style of furniture
making in both England and America.

FEATURES "F" SERIES:
All Sheraton knobs F-20 to F-30 are made up of a stamped brass face and body
- or "cup", mounted to a turned brass "shank" and a stamped
rosette, all as the originals were. A rosette is NOT furnished with F-20 3/4"
size, generally it is not required, but one is available at $.50 ea. Solid knobs
like F-31 and F-33 were used on pine furniture and built-in cupboards from the
early 1700's through 1900. F-31 is turned from solid brass, the F-33 is cast.
Information on F-32 and F-34 house door knobs will be found in the door
knobs page.
FINISH: "Golden Glow," (polished bright), or Antique, (aged)
finish furnished as desired - state preference.
ESCUTCHEONS: Escutcheons to go with F-20 to F-30 knobs will be found
in the "L" series page 31. Generally a plain esc., like L-65, would
be used for most situations, but there are many variations depending on date
and origin of a particular piece.
MOUNTINGS FOR "F" AND "G" KNOBS: F-20 to F-30 are
mounted ONLY with a post and nut. F-31 is fitted usually with a wood screw,
but a post and nut or machine screw mounting will be supplied on request without
added cost. F-33 is fitted ONLY with a 1/4-20 threaded post and nut. G-15, G-21
and G-22 are fitted STOCK with a wood screw, but a post and nut mounting for
1" or less thick wood can be supplied without added cost IF requested.
G-16 is fitted with a wood screw as stock, but a post and nut mounting is available
IF requested without added cost. ALL small knobs G-17 through G-20 are available
only with a wood screw mounting.
HISTORY: Stamped knobs of the Sheraton period were made in thousands
of patterns. As were the earlier Hepplewhite oval pulls, the faces and usually
the bodies of these knobs were stamped from thin sheet brass in hardened steel
dies. Later Empire knobs, like our F-29, were made from VERY thin brass, to
allow it to "flow", when stamped cold, into the intricate design of
the die. Few originals of this type have survived intact. Many of this later
type used iron instead of brass for the cup - to add needed stiffness to the
knob. The mounting screws for all types were machine made as a separate part,
usually from iron.
