William and Mary Drops and Pulls

1680 to 1710

FEATURES: "THINCAST," where marked by an * denotes sand cast parts throughout, as all originals were. A-85 and B-15 backplates are not cast. The edges of all plates are hand-filed as are the cast posts and William and Mary drops. The original castings were THIN, our reproductions are also, and the thickness varies with the overall plate size. Drops and pulls, A-68, A-69, A-73, and A-85 to A-90 are hand chased. Hand chasing is the art of creating a complete decoration through the use of many specially shaped chisels, struck by repeated hammer blows. No two are EVER identical, all are made as sets for each piece of furniture, to your order. A-85 and A-86 use post and nut mounting. All other "A" series pulls and drops are mounted with a snipe (see illustration). Some originals and special boring sizes on stock plates are available. We can restore or copy your originals to quotation.

FINISH: "Golden Glow," (polished bright), or Antique, (aged) finish furnished as desired - state preference.

DELIVERY: Due to their special nature, "A" and "B" series pulls are not normally stocked ready to ship. Please allow about 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.

History:

William and Mary Period 1688-1702

This was an important period in the history of furniture making. The use of brass mounts began during this period. Walnut was the favorite wood, although Oak and other wood was used. Burl and Crotch walnut veneer was used for decorative fronts. Kneehole desks, secretary or Book Case desks made their appearance as did low boys and spoon back chairs. There was a great influence by the Dutch, French and Spanish. Simple forms, comfort and grace of proportion was more important than carving.
